Having more than 6,000 collections, Moscow zoo is located as the oldest and largest zoo of Russia. The history of this zoo begins with the contribution of a group of professors-
A.P. Bogdanov, S.A. Usov, K.F Rulje, who were belongs to Moscow State University. The zoo was founded in the territory of 10 hectares with 286 animals. With the purpose of expansion and development, Moscow zoo was brought into the hands of national government in 1919.
The zoo was expanded for the first time in 1926, the area was extended to 18 hectares and the wooden buildings were constructed in traditional Russian styles. Moscow zoo faced very difficult situation during the eighties due to the negligence of Soviet Union. After the dissolution of Soviet Union in 1991, the power came into the hands of Mayor Luzhkov and the construction and renovation was rapidly carried out from his regime. Most of the modern structures were given during the 1997. Main entrance gate was built at the same time and given the new appearance to the Moscow zoo. As a result, it has become an attractive destination for local as well as foreign visitors.
Most of the families plan their weekends for Moscow zoo which is the major attraction for day trip. People can enjoy various races of animals which are native and rare in Russia.
