The history of Peter and Paul fortress reveals that there was a small island on the northern bank of Neva river which was supposed to be attacked by the navy and Swedish troops. Peter and Great established a wooden fort in 1703 to protect the island from the possible attack which was later renovated with stones.

Various world-famous Russian personalities were imprisoned such as- Alexander, Gorky, Dostoyevsky and Trotsky due to political crime.

This historical fort faced various adverse wars and revolutions inbetween 1917 and 1924.
