One of the most significant spiritual centers and historical monastery, Monastery of Sergiev posad is situated in about 75km northeast from the capital city, Moscow. It is also famous as the Holy Trinity Lavra or Trinity Sergius Monastery which was established by St. Sergius in 1345. Due to the brilliant historical and cultural attractions, this Monastery falls under the list of UNESCO’s World Heritage site which was listed in 1993.
The history of Sergiev posad goes back to the 14th century when the monk Sergii established the wooden monastery near the forest area but later it was developed as the Trinity Cathedral after the death of monk Sergii in 1422. The construction and development of the Monastery was carried out till 19th century and it was recognized as the richest Monastery of Russia in the 19th century. It was declared museum by the Soviet government in 1917. This monastery lost most of the valuables during the 19th century; most of the collections were destroyed and lost in 1930.
From the end of the 19th Century, the Monastery started spiritual education and turned it into a holy spiritual center inbetween 1960 and 1970 and it was listed in the UNESCO’s World Heritage site. On the other side, this monastery is also recognized as an industrial center as well as the most popular Orthodox monastery in Russia.
